Mary Lonergan Art ~ Autumn 2018

Greetings from my studio in beautiful Oakland!

Where have you been?? It’s been quite awhile since we’ve caught up!

So.

2018.

How’ve you been coping?

I have my methods… most involve time in the studio. An interest in line and wave and the interaction between is what’s happening in this new work.

Hope you enjoy!

ZERO POINT FIELD, PINK + BRONZE
acrylic + ink on canvas
11h x 14w / SOLD

Delighted to say that this new abstract just sold and will be off to a new collector in Pacifica, California!

This piece has several layers of orange and pink acrylic with blue ink coming through to the surface and is topped with a layer of bronze waves…

BLUE PLAID, GOLD WAVES
acrylic + ink on canvas
14h x 11w / $225

What can I say, you KNOW I love anything plaid! These orange, pink and blue layers were followed by a white paint overlay + wipe. The final layer of gold waves added last.

I love the movement in this piece…

WINTER PINK
acrylic + ink on canvas
14h x 11w / $225

This piece knocks me over. It’s my new favorite. I feel place and time and season here, and especially, the silence of snow…one of my deepest and dearest sense memories from a childhood on the east coast of Massachusetts.

It’s so satisfying to work on these abstracts. The layer build of color and texture and the fumbling (always) on where to stop… followed by a wash over in white and then the partial removal of that last, white layer.

Removal, step back, removal, step back… You don’t know what you’re getting until that one area has been wiped and then there… it comes to you.

HELLO BEAUTY…

ZERO POINT FIELD, INTENTION GOLD
acrylic + ink on canvas
14h x 11w / $225

There are certain color combinations that always work. Blue and gold …can’t really go wrong here.

I’ve recently begun using more straight metallics in my work. I used to combine a fine silver with other colors to give them a lift, but am becoming less reluctant to go for the direct shine.

I also applied some blue interferon over the blue paint in this piece so that the color effect is angle dependent. When you look at the piece straight on it looks one way + then when you walk past the work a bit and look at it, it has a different appearance. Paintings always look different depending on the light they’re placed in, but the interferon adds a bit of extra drama to the view.

LATCH IN PINK AND ORANGE
acrylic collage on canvas
14h x 11w / $225

Again colors that work well together…pink + orange with a splash of black.

I love working in collage. It’s like creating and executing your own puzzle.

COLLAGE IN GREEN, PINK + BLUE
acrylic collage on canvas
14h x 11w / $225

There may be something aeronautical here… Or perhaps a satellite floating through space. There seems to be a suspension or a slowing of time.

Love it when you can actually see the movement.
